The new rules of the inbox: Google & Yahoo mandates
Starting in 2024 and expanding through 2026, Google and Yahoo introduced mandatory enforcement requirements for all high-volume and commercial email senders.
Among strict SPF, DKIM, and DMARC alignment rules, the most technically demanding requirement is mandatory support for RFC 8058 one-click unsubscription on all promotional and commercial notifications.
Failure to implement compliant headers—or implementing them in a way that requires user authentication or interactive confirmation forms—results in automated message rejection and immediate domain reputation demotion.
Anatomy of compliant RFC 8058 email headers
To comply with RFC 8058, your outbound email must include two paired headers in the MIME message envelope:
List-Unsubscribe: <https://sadasend.com/api/unsubscribe/sub_981a7201>, <mailto:unsubscribe@sadasend.com?subject=unsub_981a7201>
List-Unsubscribe-Post: List-Unsubscribe=One-ClickWhen an email client (such as Gmail or Yahoo Mail) encounters these headers, it displays a native "Unsubscribe" button directly at the top of the reading pane next to your sender name.
When the user clicks this native button, the mailbox provider executes an unauthenticated HTTP POST request directly to the URL specified in List-Unsubscribe, passing the exact parameter List-Unsubscribe=One-Click in the body.
Building a compliant unauthenticated POST handler
The architectural challenge of RFC 8058 is security: how do you allow an unauthenticated HTTP POST request to unsubscribe a user without exposing an attack vector where malicious actors can mass-unsubscribe your customer base?
The solution is cryptographically signed, single-purpose unsubscription tokens:
- Cryptographic HMAC Tokenization: The unsubscription URL must contain an HMAC-SHA256 signature binding the tenant ID, recipient email, and campaign timestamp.
- Zero-Click Invalidation: Because mail clients trigger the POST automatically without human form submission, the handler must return an immediate HTTP 200 OK.
- Immediate Global Suppression: The recipient must be added to your account-wide suppression list within seconds to ensure subsequent scheduled messages are dropped before dispatch.
Soft bounce recovery vs. permanent suppression
Deliverability hygiene requires distinguishing between different types of sending halts. Conflating explicit user opt-outs with temporary server failures damages list health.
SadaSend maintains an automated multi-tier suppression lifecycle:
| Suppression Type | Trigger Event | Default Retention & Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Explicit Unsubscribe (RFC 8058) | User clicks native 1-click unsubscribe button | Permanent irreversible opt-out (hashed with SHA-256) |
| Spam Complaint (FBL) | User reports email as spam in mailbox UI | Permanent account-wide suppression |
| Hard Bounce (550 / 554) | Recipient mailbox does not exist or domain rejected | Permanent account-wide suppression |
| Soft Bounce (421 / 450) | Mailbox full, rate limit, or temporary DNS issue | Auto-decaying 7-day retry; released after cooldown |
