# The Zero-Overage Guarantee: Why We Abolished Surprise Cloud Invoices

> Recursive scripts and sudden spikes can turn an email API bill into a cloud nightmare. Learn how Spend Guard enforces a default $0 ceiling with credit packs.

The worst notification an engineering lead can receive is a surprise bill caused by a recursive script. Here is how hard spend ceilings and non-expiring credits fix cloud billing.

## The predatory economics of overage-based cloud billing

For years, cloud infrastructure providers have relied on a high-margin monetization tactic: under-allocating tier quotas and charging punitive penalties when customers exceed them.

In the email API market, this pricing model is especially dangerous. If a junior developer deploys an unconstrained cron job, or an autonomous AI agent enters an unhandled retry loop over a weekend, an account provisioned for $20/month can effortlessly generate thousands of dollars in surprise overages before Monday morning.

The customer has zero recourse. The provider points to fine-print terms of service and bills the credit card on file automatically.

> Software should never bill your card for unexpected amounts without explicit pre-authorization. Unlimited overages are a bug, not a billing feature.

## How Spend Guard enforces a default $0.00 ceiling

SadaSend introduces an architectural guarantee: your monthly bill will never exceed your subscribed plan tier unless you explicitly configure an overage budget.

Every new account is created with max_monthly_overage_usd: 0.00 configured by default. When your monthly sending quota is exhausted, the dispatch pipeline halts additional sends instead of silently compounding charges:

| Safety Mechanism | Traditional Cloud ESP | SadaSend Operating System |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Default overage ceiling | Unlimited ($0.00 cap does not exist) | Configurable ($0.00 default cap enforced) |
| Exhausted quota response | Silently bills card at punitive per-thousand rates | HTTP 402 spend_guard_exceeded or quarantine hold |
| Autonomous agent protection | Zero agent-level cost awareness | Per-key spend caps and 5-minute loop circuit breaker |
| Credit pack expiration | Unused credits expire at end of month | Prepaid credits never expire and roll over forever |

## Configuring refusal vs. supervisory hold behavior

Depending on the nature of your workload, hitting a spend limit requires different operational responses. SadaSend lets you choose between two deterministic behaviors:

- Immediate Policy Block (fail-fast): High-frequency automated jobs or background agents receive an immediate HTTP 402 Payment Required response with error code spend_guard_exceeded, stopping the caller before backpressure builds.
- Supervisory Outbox Hold (fail-soft): Critical transactional messages (such as password resets or purchase receipts) can be routed to an outbox hold queue (hold_verdict: "spend_guard_hold") where operators can approve dispatches with a top-up credit pack without dropping user requests.

## Non-expiring credit packs: Honest scaling without lock-in

When your business experiences seasonal traffic spikes (such as Black Friday, product launches, or annual re-engagement campaigns), upgrading to a permanent higher subscription tier is wasteful.

SadaSend provides non-expiring Sending and Verification Credit Packs:

- Zero Expiration Windows: Prepaid credit packs remain valid on your organization balance indefinitely, even if you remain on the Free Tier.
- Continuous Rollover: Unused credits automatically roll forward across billing cycles forever with zero artificial deadlines.
- Predictable Unit Economics: Know your exact marginal cost per thousand emails in advance, without variable overage multipliers.
